The Q-switched Nd YAG laser is a non-invasive way to treat pigmented skin problems, producing a high-intensity pulsed beam that lasts only a billionth of a second. Using these ultrashort pulse lasers with a wavelength of 1064 nanometers, the laser is able to target melanosomes in dermal melanocytes.
Due to the theory of selective photothermolysis, photoacoustic and thermal energy are produced at high speed. This is primarily taken up by targeted melanocytes, which rapidly swell and fragment into tiny particles.
The 1064 Nd YAG laser was one of the first treatments found to be effective for a range of skin conditions, including melasma, wrinkles, acne, and even tattoo removal.
